Album Review: Great Eastern Rock II
The last time I wrote a review was for Great Eastern Rock Vol 1, the review got lot of brick bats, and name calling which made me quit reviewing anything under the sun for a while. Well, the second installment of Great Eastern Rock is out (free give away with TNT magazine), Well here’s my review again, you can start shooting when I am done, also I will keep it short and crisp, you can share your view(s) on the comments column.
As was said by me before in my first review, Great Eastern Rock is an awesome initiative by TNT Records for bands from the North Eastern part of India. Whether the motive behind it is commercial or not, I have come across some really great bands through this compilation. GER II features a decent album art, an acoustic guitar, simple as it is, and there is nothing much I can say about it. The album features 17 songs which are too many for any compilation. After several spins I figured out that the album does not really kick start till the sixth song, also the jumbling of genres (from Death metal to Classic rock) does not make it any easier to get into the groove. But I assume selecting 17 songs from 700 plus entries is a mammoth task. 12 songs could have been better, 10 would have been ideal.
The compilation album has two sides to it one which is served very hot another disappointingly cold on the same platter, Bands like Girish and the Chronicles, Divine connection, Dima Project, Horjwlai, NorthWind, Redolent, Recycle, Polytilks, Atiar, Ninth Side, Dark Horizon and Infinite Ashes stand out from the rest. GER II hits home with some of the most beautiful and melodic songs by Indian bands. Girish and the Chronicles ‘ Angel’ , Divine Connection’s ‘Without you’ Polytiks ‘May be’, Northwind’s Black Friday Dima Project’s Lailangka and Dark Horizon’s Star, are some of my ‘personal’ favorites. Special Mention to Horjwlai’s Jong Joni Jong, Horjwlai’s experiment with Death metal and Dandiya is a clear winner (although the song itself requires a ‘tight’ recording)
So there you have it, Great Eastern Rock II by TNT Magazine can be described as a compilation with some tracks that are delicious and hot and some that are disappointingly cold. It falls short of a great compilation due to the fact that the songs do not connect with another. There are hits and also huge misses. All in all it is one long album, although it’s a splendid effort by TNT magazine to promote upcoming bands from NE, a shorter version of this album would have done more justice to this effort. Nevertheless much improved Great Eastern Rock II.
A great album loved Horjwlai and Northwing and also redolent.But i wish thy had soul mate and afflatus bands like these shud be promoed from Shillong not Atiar – Polyticks and Defying Caution.

Good album but guys get Soul mate and Aflatus they rock.Bands like POTFM dwar Defying Caution And Polyticks dont represent Shillong.
BTW girish is awesome and so was Dark Horizon.

Defying caution were ok but cmon Afflatus is da biggest and POTFM is well marketed but bands like Afflatus have a bigger stage presence .Anyway a better effort than before

Nice work guys and t think that u came up with an awesome Cd without sponsors speak volumes of ur Commitment.
Good work and i loved Redolent,SLP,Northwind,EyetoEye,Dimaproject and i think Girish is the next big thing in Indian vocalists.

GER II is an amazing effort from TNT Records to promote the bands from North East India and also the bands having their roots in NE. Its nice to see the critics giving their view points but i dont think they were so necessary. Atleast someone has come up to do this great work. You or me cud’nt do it. So stop behaving like assholes giving ur views. They are shit important.
All the bands are equally good in the compilation. The fact that these 17 songs of 17 bands got selected from 700 plus entries, proves this point. And this is just the secong innitiative. Let the seed grow into a sapling and then to a tree. Behave as a critic then!!!!!!!

Thanks for the feedback, but we’ve all struggled a lot to learn music, you can never understand that man. We appreciate soulmate’s music way more than the likes of you. I am a fan of Rudy’s playing and even learnt quite a few things watching Tipriti singing live in Soulmate’s concerts. We’ve always kept Lou , Soulmate and all other such legends above us all. But people like you are disrespecting such legends by mentioning their names in such a low level. Think twice, the next time you do anything as such.

There are bands which are really good new bands like Afflatus but you rather have Northwind and Eue 2 Eye.
As for TNT well have you read NE Sun and Ecelectic these mags are awesome and they promote good music .
TNT is only about rock,metal……….lets get some blues,jazz and some real good music.

Hey, guys! WOW, man! I’ve read all your comments and am truely amazed at the responses from our tiny side of the world about our side of music. All NorthEastern bands appreciate your appreciation and support. Kudos to all music bands in our NorthEast, genre no bar! The effort that each musically driven being staggeringly delivers is not as easy as it seems. I play the bass in Redolent and I tell you it’s not really easy to survive as a band. No! Atleast not in our part of the world. It’s only the passion for music that drives us. I understand and appreciate the efforts each band puts in to create a song. They don’t just become a good song, you gotta mould it. So why do we have to fuss about somebody’s effort? Each band entry to the GER is a genuine effort. (I am sure this compilation isn’t going to be the last). These are hard working dudes trying to share their passion for music accross to music lovers like you and me. Isn’t that enough to be appreciative? And there are those senior players like The Great Society, SoulMate and the likes (these guys ROCK man!), but would it be sensible to include them amongst their juniors? I mean, come on guys, I don’t think uncle Lou, Keith and Rudy would actually like the idea. Don’t you think so? These guys are of a different league. They are way too many steps ahead of us. I respect them, man! Anyways, music is for everyone to enjoy and as you very well know, we got different genre to choose from. Let the good times roll with music from the NorthEast.
I agree with u Steve and i loved the TNT effort it was a great compilation and u guys rocked wth the rest.My point is that there is a syndicate which does not allow other bands from the region grow and thats what pisses me off.Agreed Uncle Lou,Keith,Rudy are great but cmon man dont only try to say that this is the beggining and the end of it in terms of music.And life exists beyong Shillong and i say this even though i am a proud Khasi.Just heard a local cofee shop play the songs of GER vol 2 and now even my collage mates know the lyrics to sing along if we ever hear the bands preforming.

MY ONLY complaint against TNT is that why cant they have more of bands like Jamellia,T Rise,Candice,MJ,Wet Wet Wet,TylorSwift and Rockers Like rod steward,Richard Marx,BonJovi,backstreet Boys and of course the king of Rock Nirbana.

before dismissing a magazine completely i think you should understand that all the magazines in the region cater to different tastes. eclectic and TNT are poles apart. tnt is more into rock..as simple as that. and just because it is inclined to a particular genre it does not ’suck’. we all have different tastes. and just because two individuals have different tastes it does not mean one has to suck.

Well in a nutshell the comments from some of the friends above is exactly what ails us in the North-East. Just when there is a wonderful initiative on the part of all at TNT to promote some talent from our Region, will come out those with a “frog-in-the-well” like worms out of the woodwork to criticise. There is something called “mind space” in the marketplace and it is good enough for all the worthy magazines mentioned above to co-exist and flourish….the choice is that of the Reader! So lets not get into this denigrating act and appreciate that we get to hear Bands from distant locales in our Region for whom this will serve as a launchpad. LIVE AND LET LIVE GUYS!!

Assam is not the only state that needs representation) and lastly….you seriously can’t spell and you don’t know your English grammar too well do you, son?

Zubeen Garg was featured as a icon musician and yet TNT only covered Sourabhee and that is because the Editor is some sort of a Youth Icon of Tripura(well too bad he does not inspire me to sing )

Cmon POTFM,EYE2EYE,NORTHWIND,RECYCLE,HORJWLAI,GIRISH,DIMA PROJECT,DARK HORIZON are Taxi stereo material.
The Hill people are there because of us remember assam rifle frens of the hill people there is nothing raciest in saying that.
Learn to appriciate mags like ECELECTIC u supporters of TNT and NE Sun cause they are about politics,society,autos and sports as well

Fourth, Assamese are called Assamese outside the state of Assam.
Fifth, A magazine can feature any band it wants to…if you’re so unhappy about that…start your own.
Sixth, the Assam Rifles do call themselves the “Friends of the Hill People” but remember there are other security forces safeguarding our region as well…and a supposedly educated person like you must have heard of the various difficulties some cadres of all these security forces(yes, even the Assam Rifles )have caused for people of the region (and not just the hill people).
Seventh, If you piss on a CD and I mean ANY CD then you’re definitely not a lover of music but a straight forward fake.

What’s wrong with you man ? Why are you hellbent on belittling and criticising GER bands ? I know that you have very little knowledge of music and don’t care about people’s sentiments. Let me make it simple for you, Silver Tears…. I know them well, they are struggling band from Assam…. but they can never be compared with other Pro bands ! Even silver tears guys knows that well.
Secondly, I now hate ECLECTIC magazine like never before and we may even consider to ban it in our district if not in the state – if you don’t behave yourself here.
As for the GER 3, Go ahead and do it TNT – We are with you. Mr R. Baruah… if you have the guts and the balls, invite us all to your pissing ceremony and we’ll make sure that you eat your shit!!! We mean it !!!

Wow,music divided! It’s sad that instead of supporting the many bands who are trying their level best to make it in any genre,any language..we are mud slinging at each other! I thought music is a universal language,but the language here is not music et all! It’s really sad if people don’t know how to appreciate! It has become an assam versus the entire north east kinda thing..and by the way Mr Barua,we are not anglos! We have three different communities in Meghalaya,that is,Khasi,Jaintia and Garo and of course lets mix it a lil bit with a lot of Bengalis,Assamese(like you)!Nagas,Mizos,Nepalis,Marwaris etc etc….I nearly peed in ma pants when u said Zubeen is the rock star of bollywood…where’s the rock and where’s the star? lol..3 cheers for music and not a single one for you Mr BAR-U-ass!
