Album Review: Two Point Perspective – HUMAN ABSTRACT
By JITESH RAJAN.
The first time I ever checked out Human Abstract perform was way back in 2004 at a college fest in Andheri (Mumbai) when they performed for a relief fund with other mainstream acts from Mumbai. With their funk based alternative sound they did manage to raise a few eyebrows that evening with their vocalist Anuj really getting the crowd pumped up which no other band could accomplish that evening. With each gig thereafter Anuj and the boys turned pretty much into a pro outfit belting out some real politically driven tracks making the crowd jump and chant along. The band’s influence was pretty much evident from there on.
Their music can be described something as raw & radical & at the same time in your face.Thundering bass lines, simple but hook laden riffs & fiery choruses. With the kind of music Human Abstract composes their wasn’t much scope for solos. But whenever the lead axeman Rohan got the opportunity, he has really let it loose. Some memorable solos on “2 Point Perspective “. Disjoint was the first single I ever heard from Human Abstract . The track just blew me away. The riff on disjoint comes straight out of “Wes Borland’s “school of guitar playing. With a catchy bass line & Anuj’s over the top vox, disjoint struck a chord with everyone around and was in everybody’s playlist 2 years back.
With tracks like Re-serve & Disorder Human Abstract was winning fans at gigs because of the nature of the lyrics which was hard hitting and socially driven. Human Abstract live gigs were a treat to watch with crowds going berserk at shows. The last I saw of them was at the Channel V Launch pad gig in 2007 after which they just disappeared from the scene.
Even though the tracks were released as singles on their myspace page, an EP or a full length album was what the fans were looking for. The production on this EP is nothing short of brilliant, courtesy Fali Damania behind the boards. Fali used to be the lead axeman of the now defunct pune outfit called Aquired Funk Syndrome who were a force to reckon with in the early 2k’s having won I Rock and numerous other competitions. Besides Human Abstract he also has the Sceptre and Metakix albums on his resume.
To be out of the scene for 2 years for an Indian rock act without any gigs and album release is a pretty long time. The band is back with a bang with an EP release and as a shortlisted band at this years I-Rock XXIV. The band according to me can make it big time in the circuit if they work more on their live sets. The live energy aside the band needs to work more on their guitar tones and matching the testosterone levels of their lyrics on stage.
With an impressive EP behind them, the band looks all set to get back into the gigging circuit eyeing on a full length album in the near future.
Hope things can only get better for “ Human Abstract “ since they have a huge potential to do so.

this is one of the best albums i have come across by an indian band in a long time.
